The Case Study Teaching Method at Harvard Business School

The learning experience at Harvard Business School (HBS) relies on the immersive Case Method, a dynamic and student-led instructional approach designed to build decision-making, public speaking, and critical analytical skills. Instead of listening to traditional lectures, students analyze real-world business scenarios, evaluate incomplete data, and defend strategic decisions in real time.

Pre-Class Preparation and Case Analysis

Preparation begins long before stepping into the classroom. Students are expected to rigorously analyze dense business scenarios independently to prepare for peer discussion.

  • Complex Case Materials: Students review 10-to-20-page business case documents containing corporate background, financial data, market analysis, and supplementary tables or charts.
  • Navigating Ambiguity: Unlike traditional problem-solving models with single correct answers, case studies present open-ended, ambiguous, or incomplete data, forcing students to consider multiple viable strategic directions.
  • Guiding Questions: Instructors provide discussion prompts ahead of class to help students structure their analysis, evaluate trade-offs, and solidify strategic positions before entering the lecture hall.

The Classroom Dynamic and Cold Calling

Classrooms are structured as tiered amphitheaters where the instructor acts as a facilitator while students lead the conversation and debate.

  • The Cold Call: Every session begins with a “cold call,” where the professor randomly selects a student to open the discussion.
  • Initial Case Breakdown: The selected student has approximately four minutes to summarize the strategic scenario, define the primary business dilemma, and present a clear recommendation backed by qualitative and quantitative evidence.
  • Active Decision-Making: Students must take a definitive stand (e.g., pursuing Strategy A vs. Strategy B) despite missing information, training them to make high-stakes managerial decisions under pressure.

Debates, Conceptual Injections, and Learning Scale

Once the initial presentation concludes, the discussion opens up to the broader class, fostering high-energy debate and collaborative synthesis.

  • Peer Debate & Discussion: Students build upon, challenge, or debate the initial presenter’s arguments. Interventions must be concise, precise, and well-substantiated.
  • Faculty Mini-Lectures: When key business theories or analytical models emerge, the instructor temporarily pauses debate to deliver a brief (under 10 minutes) blackboard explanation of core frameworks.
  • Curriculum Volume: Over the course of the 21-month MBA program, students analyze and discuss approximately 400 to 500 case studies, establishing deep familiarity with diverse industries, market dynamics, and leadership style.
